My first professional experience out of college came with nbcu academy. i was selected through a competitive national recruiting process as one of six embeds in nbcu academy's embed program inaugural cohort — part of a multimillion-dollar DEI commitment by Comcast.
I was embedded as a reporter for NBC Latino, the english language latino section of Nbcnews.com. at the same time i connected, networked and spoke with nbcu executives, senior leaders and media professionals during quarterly professional developmental sessions provided by nbcu academy. I was also able to assist nbcu academy producers and staff at summer journalism conventions, events at university campuses on tv production sets. I also wrote, edited and produced multimedia reports on diversity-related issues. and i filmed my experience as an embed, captured images and edited videos posted online To help increase awareness of the program.
i also edited sizzle reels to showcase the cohort's experience in the program and engaged and conducted outreach to college undergrads and recent graduates. nbcu academy also connected me with a mentor for six months to learn more about the media industry, grow skills and produce stories for digital and tv. i also produced graphics for a company-wide presentation and directed presentation's live production. i also had the chance to beta-test and provide feedback for nbcu academy's online learning modules before public release.
Pacoima’s cooling project could be a playbook for other incredibly warm — and often working-class — California neighborhoods to get relief.
NBCU Academy embeds reflect on AAJA and NABJ/NAHJ, the biggest in-person networking events of their careers.
“You do get a lot of impostor syndrome, a lot of self-doubts. Build a network of not just friends and professors, but people who are going to support you.”
